The Museum and Art Tour
he museum and art tour of Manitoulin Island offers a taste of the local Ojibwe art and culture, as well as an interesting look back at the days of the early settlers with visits at two complimentary museums. The excursion begins with a 30 minute transfer South on Hwy 6 to the historic town of Manitowaning, and a visit to the Assiginack Museum Complex.
Currently undergoing a major renovation, the Assiginack museum was originally constructed as a jail in 1878. Today it houses a reconstructed jail cell, a display on birds of Manitoulin, a fine collection of Canadian and American glass and china, and a display featuring the First Nation gift giving and treaties items from the 19th century. Outer buildings include a blacksmith shop school, an early 19th century home and a one room school house.
After departing Manitowaning, our guests have a short 15 minute transfer to Ten Mile Point, a breathtaking lookout. On a clear day it is possible to look over and photograph over 1000 square miles of the North Channel and the LaCloche Mountains. This stop is the location of the Ten Mile Point Trading Post, a gift shop with intricate works of art carved from stone, moose and deer antlers, and an extensive collection of porcupine quill boxes, moccasins and paintings from renowned Native Artists.
After this exceptional shopping and sightseeing stop, it's a 10 minute transfer to the Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah. This stop allows guests the opportunity to see first hand how the early settlers on Manitoulin Island lived, with artifacts including clothing, household furniture, dishes and farm implements. Two new marine exhibits tell of the diverse marine traffic from the 1880's up until present day cruise ships. A new exhibit features a salvaged Beechcraft staggerwing aircraft that was used by President Roosevelt in his fishing visit to the area in 1943. The excursion concludes with a short transfer back to downtown Little Current for a leisurely stroll of the business section and a chance to visit the quaint shops.
