Recreation

he main excursion or marketing niche for Little Current has been the native Pow-Wow performance hosted by the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation. This shore excursion allows the visitor the chance to step back in time to see and to gain an understanding of the lore and culture of our Indigenous peoples. Details of the itinerary and tour description can be found attached to this information package. Little Current is a town of 1,500 people that today finds its primary industry in tourism. It is the financial and administrative centre of the eastern section of Manitoulin and has many shops and stores for the visitor to explore.

Little Current HarbourCruise visitors step off their ship in the centre of the downtown and find themselves surrounded by both sail and power boats of every size and description. One of the excursions offered to cruise passengers is an escorted tour of the town, that looks back into the early lumbering days at the turn of the century settlement of the area. Little Current has several shops and private art galleries that cater to the visiting public.

Many of the galleries feature works from well known local artists. The artistic theme is often the natural beauty of the area and sometimes the sights that visitors will see for themselves as they visit the island.

Manitoulin Island ViewManitoulin is a geographic wonder as the landscape is much more like the Bruce Peninsula and southern Ontario than the Canadian Shield formations to the north. Manitoulin is in many ways a section of southern Ontario that was scooped up by the glaciers thousands of years ago and deposited hundreds of miles to the north. This gives Manitoulin many unique characteristics from towering escarpments to the beaches where every rock is a fossil. The rock formations are so unique that geology students from all over Canada make an annual trek to Manitoulin to study the terrain. The uniqueness of the terrain has led to the establishment of several beautiful hiking trails. These have been incorporated into excursion for the physically fit, adventure seeking cruise visitor.

Little Current HarbourManitoulin is well known as one of the premier fishing destinations in Ontario and charter fishing is available at several locations throughout the island. Golf has become a very important holiday pass-time and there are three golf courses located on Manitoulin. Two are within easy transfer from Little Current for cruise passengers. Tennis, cycling and archery are some of the other recreational activities that are available to Manitoulin visitors. Each summer amateur astronomers from all over North American visit Manitoulin for The Great Manitou Star Party.
